What To Do If You Are Contacted By The FBI or Law Enforcement

You do not have to talk to the FBI or police. Do not say anything without a lawyer. If you are a non-citizen, it is very important that you have a lawyer. If an FBI agent or police officer asks to speak to you and you prefer to have a lawyer, tell him or her that you want to consult with the lawyer first. Write down the name, agency and telephone number of the person who calls or visits you. Tell him or her that your lawyer will contact him soon.

You do not have to permit a FBI agent or police officer to enter your home or office. FBI agents or police officers cannot search your home unless you give them permission or unless they have a search warrant. If they say, they have a warrant, demand to see it before allowing them to enter. Even if they have a warrant, you do not have to answer questions.

Never lie or provide false information to the FBI or police. Lying to the FBI or the police is a crime.

The ACLU of Washington will locate a lawyer for you who can provide confidential free legal advice.

Contact the ACLU at (206) 624-2184 or
the 24-hour Arab Hotline at (206) 634-9001
